Brief Home and Property Description:

This investigation involved a large, 2-story home with finished basement that was built in the 1930's. It was originally built by an eccentric man as a private residence. At one time it was used as a restaurant and antique store but sometime during late 1940's or early 1950's, the home was renovated into a nursing home and remained in that capacity for decades. The State ended up shutting down the nursing home after finding extremely bad conditions. The house sat vacant for 10 years until purchased by the current homeowner in 1998 who is currently using the home as a private business and living quarters. At this time, it is occupied only by the security staff but renovations are underway to restore the home into a combined business/family home for the current owner and his family.

In touring the home, one could not help but reminded of a miniature Rose Red, as it was very easy to lose your way. The home seemed to have many back stairways and hallways throughout. The home was approximately 7500 square feet and in addition to the 3 stories, contained an annex hallway that connected the main home with a smaller cottage. This smaller cottage was said to have housed the men during the years it was a nursing home and the women were kept in the main house.

County & Community History

The history of the community is extensive. Jackson County was the hub of activity in the early 1800's, the stopping and meeting place for many travelers heading west. This was due to the existence of the railroad, wagon trans and the Missouri River, making it an ideal community for businessmen and traders and it was quickly populated. The transportation access made this community a focus for control during the Border War and Civil War. There are many accounts of skirmishes with the Red Legs and guerillas during the Border War and the importance of this community became even more evident during the Civil War where 16 battles occurred between 1861 and 1864.

Current Owner Reportings:

+ Very high energy felt in certain locations in the home.

+ A previous owner admitted that two of the former residents were still very active and communicated with her post death.

+ Items are moved to different locations.

+ Many noises heard at night.

+ The house can seem very depressing at times.

+ The basement is especially freaky. This is where it has been reported that the worst suffering patients were taken and given minimal care until their deaths.

+ Toys have been heard and seen playing on their own.

Reported Findings and Experiences:

+ While Brenda was taking photos in the kitchen of the security guards living quarters, a 50 caliber artillery shell fell from the top of a 7' shelf that was located in the library. The shelf had not been bumped. Joyce indicated that the ghost occupying this living quarters was letting her know that he was there and that he was a military man. In this same room, when Shayla was left there alone, she had a physical contact with the ghost that was present.

+ When Brenda reached the landing of the stairway leading to the 2nd floor, she felt a very heavy presence and had difficulty breathing. When Joyce reached this same landing during her reading, she also had difficulty breathing and became very confused, wandering from room to room on the 3rd floor until she had to be taken back downstairs.

+ 29 orbs were recorded on video. 6 of those orbs were recorded on the 1st story, 20 were recorded on the 2nd story and 3 were recorded in the basement.

+ 11 EVPs were recorded as follows:

2 EVPs were recorded on the 1st story as follows:

+ The sound of a woman "Screeching" as if in pain.

+ What sounds like a female voice saying, "Don't".

5 EVPs were recorded on the 2nd story as follows:

+During Joyce's confusion upstairs, the voice of a woman saying "Help me, help me". (For more details see Psychic reading.)

+ A female voice saying "Who's that gentleman?"

In the 2nd story room where the military ghosts was found the following EVPs were recorded:

+ A male voice saying, "Edwin" or "Evelyn".

+ A male voice which said, "Little Jack".

+ During a discussion between Joyce and the security officer about an incident involving his girlfriend and the balcony, a male voice is recorded saying, "You're going to kill somebody."

2 EVPs were recorded in the basement area:

+ A female voice saying, "Well that would be great".

+ Just after Brenda set up the EVP in the bathroom area of the basement, a raspy male voice is captured on tape saying, "I'm so mad". (See Psychic reading for details about this area of the basement.)

2 EVPs were recorded in the Lion's Den (the annexed cottage) as follows:

+ A whispery female voice is heard in the background saying what sounds like, "With a Shield" as the homeowner welcomes us to the Lion's Den.

+ While the team and homeowner were discussing how packed the rooms must have been, an EVP is recorded when a whispery voice decides to add their opinion and says, "Like a Dog".

+ The photo of a vortex was captured in one room of the Lion's Den.

Psychic Readings:

+ Before arriving Joyce detected an elderly gentleman who was about 5'10"or 5'11" tall and walked with a hickory cane. He said he was buried in a nearby cemetery. He has dark hair and honey brown eyes. He bangs some of the doors. Upon sharing this reading with psychic Misty, who was unable to be present, Misty told us of a gentleman who was named William who fit the description given. Misty worked at the nursing home when she was 16 and was familiar with some of the patients there.

+ A military man picks on the security officer. He is a ghost and an energy sucker. He is angry and he knew the man with the cane. The man with the cane does not want him here. The personality of the military man is similar to the personality of the security officer which is what causes his conflicts and confrontation with the military man. He does not want the security officer here. This man read allot of books, mainly westerns and Civil War stories. He was fascinated with the Civil War. They would not let him bring his books with him to the nursing home and they upset him. He has thinning reddish-brown hair and is about 6 foot tall. He shows me a picture of a Model-T that he owned. He chews tobacco and drinks whiskey.

+ On the first floor there were 5 women kept in one room at one time. An EVP was picked up during this reading which sounded like the screech of a woman.

+ There were several cats and lots of kittens in this house at one time. Homeowner confirmed that previous owner was a cat-lover and had owned several cats.

+ There was lots of activity in the recreation room.

+ There was lots of military activity here during the 1860's, even as early as the Border Wars. The Missouri Militia was present many times as were the Kansas Red Legs. There was a battle nearby and there were horse stables located along here. Also a long pole shed with a tin roof. The area was open and there were military tents all around. A wagon trail that leads to Westport is nearby. There was also a cabin nearby where Quantrell and his men held some meetings. The cabin was located to the northwest and there is a picture of this cabin in a history book somewhere. Beneath this picture is the name Charles H. He was a tall guy with a big barrel chest and walked with a silver tipped cane. His name may be Charles H. Gillenroy or Deffenroy or something sounding like that. I keep hearing a man say, "The Raiders Come." See community history report for confirmation of Border War and Civil War activity in the area. History also reports a raid conducted by the Kansas Red Legs that caused much chaos and devastation in the community. It is also known that Quantrell and his men often met in this community.

+ There is a woman here named Ruth or Ruby and another one name Aggie or Maggie. Some of those that are here have already been to the spirit world and come in and out.

+ There is a door downstairs where they loaded patients in the ambulances. The basement was the final resting place of those who passed here. Everyone knew what being taken to the basement meant. It was the death room. This reading was given before Joyce went downstairs where a metal door had been installed to transport patients. The owner confirmed that the basement was where the dying patients were taken.

+ Someone here was named Courtney.

+ When Joyce reached the landing on the 2nd floor (this was the same landing where Brenda felt a heavy presence earlier) she became very disoriented and confused. She was breathing very hard and walked from room to room saying "Where Am I." During this encounter an EVP was recorded of a woman's voice saying "Help me, Help me." After Joyce was walked back downstairs, she said that she saw a medical procedure being performed on one of the patients. She described this procedure in detail, but due to the graphic nature of this description, that reading will remain confidential. The homeowner who has a background in medicine, was able to identify the procedure and the instruments used.

+ There is a home nearby for wayward girls which is very haunted. Homeowner was able to give a location for this home and confirmed that it was near.

+ A man with the name of Ballew or Blue worked here for a long time and died in 1941.

+ A lady upstairs had a stroke. She drags her right arm, shoulder and leg. She is a ghost. She used to wear a pair of old felt house slippers.

+ At one time, due to the cold or a power outage, the men had to be moved to the main house. One woman was complaining about it and a man told her to shut up. The man was from the southern part of Canada. This man points to a woman and says, "See her, her name is Montgomery, she died of a heart attack." During this reading an EVP of a female voice was recorded saying "Don't".

+ There are many here who have been to the light, but some have not. The upstairs is very heavy.

+ A woman named Rosie or Rosa says, "I just loved it here." She said that they took very good care of her.

+ There are 14 spirits in the basement. They embalmed some people there. One woman was missing all of her teeth.

+ There was a man hanged in this room, (a bathroom area of the basement), but this was before this house was here. He is barefooted and had long dark hair. His feet were tied. This happened during the 1800's. His grave was disturbed when they dug the basement of the home. They found his remains but just discarded them. He is very angry about this. His name may have been Harold Gates. An EVP was recorded in this room of a male voice saying, "I'm so mad."

+ There is a place here in the hallway where you can't think or talk. Someone was trying to tell me something, but they couldn't get it out.

+ Somebody died in the shower in the basement.

+ A woman fell down the stairs in the utility stairway. She broke her back and was unable to move. This may have been one of the workers here.

+ There were two brothers here in the Lion's Den. (The Lion's Den was the name given to the annexed cottage that is attached to the house.) Gentlemen were kept in this building and there are good vibrations here.

Clearing:

A clearing was performed and according to homeowner, the home seems to be very peaceful and quiet now. The security guard still feels that something remained behind. MPR will continue to check back with homeowner from time to time to see if any additional activity is reported.
