(See Reported Findings & Experiences & Psychic Reading) Brief Property
Description & Current Reportings: The "Sallie
House" in Atchison, Kansas first became known as a haunted location
in the 1990's when a young couple who were renting the house filmed
several segments with the media, which included "Sightings" and
"Unsolved Mysteries." According to the reports obtained by MPR,
the house was once owned by a doctor who used the house as a private home
and office for his practice. Sometime in the middle of the night, long
ago, a 6 year old girl named Sallie began having severe abdominal pains in
the middle of the night and was rushed to the doctor's house for
treatments. Upon diagnosis the doctor determined that she needed immediate
medical care and wanted to proceed with surgery. Upon seeing the surgical
instruments, Sallie became very frightened and had to be held down in
order for the doctor to administer the ether. Before the anesthesia took
its full effect, the doctor began operating and Sallie awoke and began
struggling with him. The operation was unsuccessful and Sallie died thus
remaining in the house after her death. The house was
rented in 1993 to a young couple who began immediately to have many
unexplained occurrences in the home such as toys being moved to the middle
of the floor in the nursery, lights dimming or brightening in the living
room, small spontaneous fires, electrical appliances turning on and off,
pictures turning upside down, candles melting, the sound of footsteps,
cold spots and smells. Eventually the incidents became malevolent and the
husband began to get scratched by unseen hands. This scratching was
actually filmed by "Sightings" as it occurred right before their
eyes. The husband began seeing a woman who he often mistook for his wife
and began having dreams of a child being beaten. He was violently shoved
out of the bedroom and almost fell over the railing and down the stairs. A psychic was
called in who felt that 2 spirits were haunting the house; a 6 year old
girl named Sallie and a woman who was about 30 years old. Apparently the
woman ghost was fond of the husband and was trying to cause problems
between him and his wife. She began to attack the husband after her
attempts were unsuccessful. MPR has been
unable to determine how much actual research has been done upon the home.
It is unknown to us rather any validation of the death of
"Sallie" has been found. "Legends of
America" conducted a 60 hour investigation of the house and recorded
several voices through EVP. These voices included the voice of a young
girl, a boy, a man and possibly two women. Investigations
of the "Sallie House" have continued over the years, some
reporting experiences while others did not have much success. Reported
Findings and Experiences: +
Tape recorders
were set up in all the upstairs bedrooms. Shortly after setting up the
tape recorder in the master bedroom, it was noticed that the audio
recorder had been shut off. When the recorder was turned back on, the
battery indicator lights showed a full charge. In reviewing the tape, just
prior to the recorder shutting off, a grinding sound was heard on the tape
like what it sounds like when the buttons are pushed ½ way down causing
the tape to drag. +
Prior to the
investigation and on the initial walk-thru, it was noticed that some
ping-pong balls appeared to have been thrown onto the floor of the master
bedroom closet/nursery. Brenda arranged the 11 balls along the north wall
of the closet/nursery, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Shortly after
the audio recorder had mysteriously shut off, Misty thought that she heard
a clicking sound come from the closet/nursery. Upon investigation of the
sound, it was found the 8th ball from the left had been rolled
to the other side of the closet and was now resting in the far southwest
corner. (See photos - Group
1) The ball would have had to travel about 8 feet. MPR
tested the travel distance of the balls by rolling them across the floor
and found that they would only travel about 2 feet before stopping due to
new carpet. They also tested the slant of the floor and found none. This
was only the first incident of objects moving and several more would
follow throughout the evening. A video camera was moved to the master
bedroom to monitor the balls but no further movement came from the
closet/nursery area. There had been toys placed in all of the upstairs
window sills by owner or previous visitors and photos were taken of all
objects and their placements at this time. +
Misty felt
something shove her after walking into the northeast bedroom. +
An EVP of a
young male voice was recorded in the Master Bedroom which sounds as if he
says,
"I'm Happy". Just after
this EVP recording, Misty stated that she heard something in the master
bedroom. Upon going into the room, they found that some of the toys
(salamanders and frogs) that were placed in the south windowsill of the
bedroom had been moved. (See photos - Group
2). After this incident another video
camera was brought into the room to monitor this window sill. As this
camera was being set up, an EVP was captured of a male voice saying what
sounds like, "Throw them in".
This
was followed by another EVP of what sounded like the voice of the young
male saying, "I'm Sorry". No
additional movement of the toys on this window sill occurred after setting
up the camera to monitor it. +
More EVPs were
recorded in the master bedroom later in the evening. One sounded like
someone saying
"He Done It".
It is
difficult to tell the gender of this person or if it was the same voice
recorded earlier. Another was of a deep male voice which sounds like he
says, "He said it don't matter what I
say". This EVP was immediately followed by another very clear
EVP of possibly the same voice saying, "That'd
be Frank Walters". It was unknown what the MPR team was
discussing at the time. +
Misty suddenly
felt something at the top of the stairs and went over to take some
pictures. Her camera would not work. At this time an EVP of a male voice
was recorded saying,
"Get Out of Here."
This was followed by Misty saying, "Hey" which was followed by
another male voice giving the name of "Godfrey",
"Connery" or perhaps that word
"Gonorrhea".
Misty continued to
struggle with her camera and then a voice of a possibly a woman was
recorded which sounds as if she says, "Before
the Punch". +
Shortly after
going upstairs Misty, Brenda and Dee Ann were in the master bedroom
rearranging the cameras Misty stated that she heard a noise in the
northeast bedroom. Upon walking into the room to investigate the noise,
they found one of the teddy bears lying in the floor. It had previously
been positioned in the west windowsill. The "before pictures"
taken of the toys positioned in that window sill showed that teddy bear
had been leaning slightly forward but did not appear to be ready to fall
off.
(See Photos - Group 3)
While photographing the bear on the floor, the tape
recorder in this room shut off. Upon examination of the recorder there was
no reason for it to shut off. The batteries were still fully charged and
there was plenty of tape. The team again decided to reposition cameras and
while setting up the video camera to record the northeast bedroom, the
following EVPs were recorded in the southeast bedroom: A male voice
saying, "Stay in here" shortly
followed by a young female voice clearly saying, "Don't
You See Me?" +
Misty, Dee Ann
and Brenda went back upstairs and checked to see if any further movement
had occurred with the toys but found everything to still be in place. They
then went into the Master Bedroom to attempt further contact with the
young boy. Just after everyone noted an extreme temperature change, Brenda
stated that she heard a noise in the southeast bedroom. When they went to
investigate the noise they found one of the squirt guns lying on the
floor. It had previously been sitting on the east windowsill. The
"before pictures" clearly show that none of the squirt guns were
positioned near the edge of the window sill.
(See
Photos - Group 4) The other squirt guns in the
windowsill were undisturbed. Just after the squirt gun was found on the
floor and the team began to reposition cameras again, an EVP was recorded
of a young male voice in the master bedroom saying what sounds like "Come
Follow Me". +
All of the
movements of the objects listed in the report above occurred within a 90
minute period. Once cameras were positioned in those rooms to monitor
additional activity, the activity ceased. +
An EVP of a
female voice was recorded in the south bedroom which sounds like she is
saying,
"Sleepy" or
"Sleeping".
This was recorded not long after team members went downstairs to catch
some sleep before the drive home. +
After
considering the noises that were heard in the rooms just prior to
discovering the repositioned toys, it was determined (with the exception
of the ping pong ball) that none of these objects would have made a noise
when hitting the floor or being repositioned. What caused the noises is
unknown. It was also determined that no heating vents were anywhere near
the windowsills. The windows had been replaced with new windows and no
breezes were coming through. We were able to further rule out breezes
coming through the windows since these activities occurred in a south,
west and east windowsill. Although it was raining, the winds were reported
to be calm. +
After the team
fell asleep, a recorder left running in the kitchen
picked up what sounds like the raspy voice of a woman followed by banging
sounds. +
Several orbs
were recorded on video in the upstairs hallway. Psychic
Readings: Misty +
I'm going up the steps right now and I feel a young boy of about the age
of 21 or 22 years old. He's a little upset about something. He's not
quite a normal child. He seems to be a little bit slow. Seems like he didn't
like coming here but he had a lot of physical ailments. He had something
like seizures. I feel him being kept here for some time. His name was
Jesse. I'm feeling really nauseous here in the hallway. Master
Bedroom +
The doctor who lived here had Alzheimer's towards the end of his life.
He was getting really senile. He was kind of mean and cranky man. +
Jesse would stand and look out the window. He liked looking out for some
reason and he would stand there and rock and just look. Sometimes they
kept him locked in the closet when he got too disruptive. North
Bedroom +
Something just pushed me. There is something in here that is not good. South
Bedroom +
Some of the patients were kept here overnight and he would keep them in
the south bedroom when they did. +
I just got chest pain. Did the doctor die of a heart attack here? I have
hunching shoulders and chest pain. There's an older man here who walked
with his hand at his chest and hunched over. He has a long nose and is
tall. He has a balding head, is wearing a suit and tie and is about 5'7"
or 5'8". He's walking like he's pacing. I'm picking up the
name Sims. He was a businessman. For some reason the doctor kept overnight
guests, they may have been patients who needed looking after. When he did,
he kept them in this room. I feel people here. +
There's a child in this house but it stays hidden most of the time. It's
a little girl. +
Jesse is the one I feel the strongest. He's not very tall. He's only
about 4 foot tall. It's almost as if he has Down's syndrome. His face
is rounder with the big eyes. +
I get very dizzy in the hallway every time I come in here. Master
Bedroom +
I just heard something click in the closet. (This
is when the ping pong ball was found moved in the closet. The reading was
temporarily postponed while the team investigated any natural causes that
may have caused the ball to move.) +
This is the room where I keep seeing the boy. (At
this time, Misty noticed that the salamanders and frogs in the south
windowsill were all in a pile. Previously they were lined up.
Unfortunately MPR did not have any "before" pictures of this
window sill. The salamanders and frogs were lined up again and photos were
taken.) +
There is the older man, the boy and a younger child but I can't say for
sure that it's a girl. There's also something else in this house. +
I wonder if the doctor had arthritis because I feel like it's very hard
to walk up and down these steps, mainly with the right hip.

Room/Dining Room +
When the doctor saw patients,
most of them were lined up and he examined them in here (dining room). He
did take them upstairs sometimes too. +
I do get the name Jenkins, Jennings or Jensen. A lady walks over with that
name. They had an oriental lady who was there servant. The oriental lady
is at one of the houses nearby here. She's not a ghost in this house but
she haunts another house not too far away. She came with some people who
migrated this way. They called her Linn. She had tuberculosis. Basement +
I'm feeling a woman down here
who had a bad knee and a bad leg. She must have been 55 or 60 years old.
She fell on the bottom step after losing her balance. She used to help the
doctor. That's what her role here was. Her name was Mary Jean. She would
come and clean the house and help out with cooking and the patients. +
Somebody was trying to do something down here that they didn't know a
whole lot about. This person used a Ouija Board and they brought something
in. That's what pushed me upstairs and that's what scratched that one
man. General +
I don't feel the doctor haunting this house. +
The ones haunting the house are the little girl who comes here off and on.
She doesn't stay here all the time, most of the time she goes to her own
house; the boy with Down's syndrome. He's more like 17 or 18 years
old. I think he's the one who moved the balls and moved the toys. He's
the one doing the things here; Mary Jean, the woman who fell in the
basement and the older man who had the chest pains. Master
Bedroom (Attempt to contact the boy named Jesse later in the evening) +
His parents took care of him, he
lived with his mother and sister and then something happened and the
doctor ended up with him. +
He liked to be rocked or liked the rocking motion. He would stand and look
out the window and rock himself. +
He says his Daddy went to work and didn't come home. He said his daddy
worked on the choo-choo. Choo-Choo is what he called it so he must have
worked for the railroad. +
The house he lived in with his mother and sister caught on fire and
burned. Both his sister and mother died in the fire. Then he came to live
with the doctor. Perhaps the doctor was the only one willing to care for
him because of his seizures and his disability. +
He liked to suck his thumb and he would hold his ear with the same hand at
the same time and then he would rock back and forth. An
extreme drop in temperature occurred at this time and then shortly
afterwards, Brenda heard a sound come from the south bedroom. At this
time, Misty, Brenda and Dee Ann ended the communication and went into the
south bedroom and found the squirt gun lying on the floor. NOTE: The 2nd
movement of the salamanders and frogs in the master bedroom and the
finding of the teddy bear on the floor in the north bedroom, occurred
between the time that Misty did her initial reading and the time MPR
attempted to contact Jesse in the Master Bedroom. MPR SUMMARY +
Although
MPR did not collect much photographic or video evidence from the Sallie
House investigation, we do believe based upon our individual experiences
and the EVPs collected that the Sallie House is still haunted. This is the
first time that we have experienced movement of objects and it was quite
exciting to have so many objects move in such a small time frame. There
was absolutely no explanation that we could find for the movements of
these objects. We had hoped to catch something on film, but every time a
camera was set up, there was no additional activity in the area in which
the camera was placed. The only proof we have of this experience is in the
photographs. Although some may feel that these photographs were staged, we
can assure you that they were not. +
Misty felt
that the ghost responsible for the moving toys was a young boy with Downs
Syndrome. She also felt the house was being haunted by a man and a woman. +
