Town History

Although it is normally our practice not to reveal the location of our investigations, the history of where this investigation was conducted played a major role in the haunting that our clients were experiencing.

Lexington , Missouri was the site of two major battles in Missouri during the Civil War along with numerous skirmishes. It was the states 5th largest community at the outbreak of the war and its population was increasing. The town had 3 colleges and was the hub of trading, factories and warehouses along the Missouri River. It also held a prominent political position in the state.

As with many Missouri towns, Lexington’s civilians were divided in their loyalties during the Civil War which caused dissention amongst neighbors.

On September 10, 1861, both Union and Confederate troops began assembling on the outskirts of Lexington,  preparing for battle. There were many skirmishes that broke out during this time as more and more soldiers and volunteers arrived. It was not until the 18th of September that the battle finally broke out lasting for 3 days. The final day of the battle consisted of hand to hand combat. The lack of ammunition and rations took its toll on both sides. After three intense days of fighting, the Federals laid down their weapons and the Battle of Lexington ended in a Confederate victory.

The casualties were low. Of the enlisted men, the Confederates reported 33 killed and 150 wounded while the Federals reported 40 killed and 120 wounded. These reports did not include the volunteer troop casualties and wounded, so the numbers were actually higher then reported.

The battleground was preserved and became a tourist site in 1955.

For more detailed information on this particular battle, visit:

The 2nd battle that occurred in Lexington, took place on October 19, 1864 and resulted in another Confederate victory. The casualties for this battle were unknown.

Brief Home Description:

One story home built in 1929. The home consisted of a living room, 2 bedrooms, kitchen/dining room, laundry room, bathroom and cellar.

Current Owner Reportings:

+ Female homeowner and her sister heard something roll across the floor in the daughter’s bedroom. This happened several times and at one time, the item was thrown hard against the wall. The next morning upon examining the room, they found her daughter’s  plastic “Barbie” shoes and hairclips on the floor. The also found some items lined up in a row at the foot of the bed.

+ Homeowners daughter told her mother that she saw monsters in her room that had black eyes.

+ The male homeowner felt something tug on his shirt while he was in the bathroom.

+ Female homeowner sometimes hears a voice talking to her very loud and very fast.

+ Homeowner found daughters plastic “Barbie” chair sitting in the middle of her daughter’s bed.

+ The bathroom faucet has turned on and off by itself.

+ A female friend who was spending the night in the living room, observed the curtains blowing straight out from the window. This happened 3 times and on the 3rd time she asked it to stop. Upon doing so, the curtains fell back down and there were no more incidents.

+ Missing items have turned up in strange places or in places which have already been searched.

+ Homeowner and her sister witnessed the dining room chairs slide back from the table.

+ Lights have turned on and off by themselves.

+ Female homeowner heard a knock on the back door and went to see who was there to find nobody. She left the house after this incident. She said that she would no longer stay at the house without someone being there with her. Her fiancé has been deployed overseas but was due to return home the week after our investigation.

Reported Findings and Experiences:

+ Upon entering the house, all team members felt a very strong presence.

+ A series of some very interesting EVPs were recorded just after the investigation got underway and just after the screen door opened. Two male voices were recorded in conversation saying the following: (Voice #1) I’m not a ghost.” (Voice #2) How Do They Prove It To Be Ghosts?” (Voice #1) “Let’s Reek Havoc.” (Voice #2 & Voice #1) “Lay Down... No, I’m Butt Naked." These EVPs were recorded within a 15 second time frame. There were no males present during the investigation. Here is the entire conversation without breaking each EVP into separate files: EVP Series.

+ Another EVP was recorded in the daughter’s bedroom while Misty and Brenda were discussing a photo which possibly showed some kind of anomaly in front of a poster of the” Disney Princesses” that was hanging in the room. A male voice was recorded saying They’re Fairies. This would have been a logical description of the poster from someone who lived during the 1800’s. When the photo was blown up, the possible anomaly was just a distortion of color caused by the small camera screen.

+While Misty was conducting her reading in the living room, the front screen door opened up, almost touching the window on the south side of the door and then closed. Thinking that the wind may have caused this incident, Brenda went outside to check the door and the direction of the wind. The wind was blowing from the south at 10 mph. In order for the screen door to open, it would have had to open against the wind. Still doubting that something other than the wind may have opened the door, Brenda said, “If someone is here, could you please open the door again.” The door swung open on this command. Still in doubt, Brenda said, “I need to verify that someone is here, so please close the door now.” The door closed. At this time Brenda detected a significant temperature difference on the porch. The porch was extremely cold compared to the open front yard. She then went and asked Misty to come to the front of the house and repeat the commands. When Misty asked for the door to be opened and closed, it again repeated. Throughout the rest of the investigation, the door would open slightly on occasion but not nearly as far as what it did during these two incidents. Near the end of the investigation, the team was gathered in the living room discussing the clearing when the door again opened up wide enough to almost touch the south window and then closed. It needs to be noted that the door was broken and did not close completely. It’s natural hang allowed about a 6 inch gap between the door frame. Although it’s possible that the wind could have had caused the door to open and close slightly, it’s unlikely that the door would have opened all the way against a 10 mph wind.

+ Another series of EVPs were recorded in the living room while Misty was setting up her camcorder. At least two voices were recorded as follows: (Voice #1) “It’s Over.” (Male Voice) “Don’t Let Me Down.” (Male Voice) “Forever?” (Male Voice) “Please Help.” Later in the evening, another EVP was recorded in the living room of a male voice saying “It’s Over.” This was one of the same voices recorded earlier. Apparently they were very happy at the prospect of going into the light.

+ After Misty identified who she felt was haunting the house, the atmosphere became very peaceful and the heaviness that was first felt upon entering was no longer present.

+ One of the homeowner’s visitors reported smelling a very strong sulfer smell. No one else present smelled it at this time. Bonnie later reported that during the clearing, she got a whiff of the sulfur smell just before she felt a spirit passing through her into the circle.

+ The homeowner and one of her guests reported hearing a male voice say something behind them as they were sitting on the floor in the living room.

Psychic Readings :

MISTY

+ They are very heavy in here.

+ There are 3 men here. They are all 3 soldiers.

+ There is a female here that is very timid.

+ One of the soldiers is 16 years old. He is the one who has moved the toys. He was with his uncle. He came down from Kentucky. He also mentions Georgia. He stays here with his uncle. They were killed during a battle.

+ The other soldier comes from the north-east and he walks over this way.

+ There wasn’t a house here then.

+ The woman’s name is something like Lou, Linda Lou, Lila Lou, something Lou. Lou may be part of the last name. She is just like very soft, very timid.

+ The young boy is the one who does most of the activity. He seems to have a lot of energy. He has blonde hair, blue eyes and he is about 5’8” or 5’9”. His first name is Eric. Johnson or Johnston. He’s very frail and thin.

+ The uncle has a full beard. He’s a gruffy looking dude. Broad shoulders and a weathered looking face. He was up there in age. The uncle helped take care of his nephew because the boy’s father passed away. The uncle’s name is Mike. Same last name.

+ They died fairly close by here. His uncle was killed first. The young boy was killed in a different spot but he found his way back to his uncle. He died a little further to the west. The young boy was shot in the neck. The uncle was shot in the back. He got shot twice and died on this property, out front. He was shot in the back and in the side.

+ The other soldier, I don’t feel him so much. He’s more standoffish. He hangs out in the back half of the house, more towards the bathroom.

+ This house wasn’t here then. It was just land. I do see a gate and a fence that the young boy is showing me so it must be from another house. That’s where his body was left. His uncle died here. After he died, the younger boy came back this way looking for him.

+ The boy and his uncle are wearing grey uniforms. The other soldier is wearing blue. His name is Jonathan Brown. Maybe that’s why they are having such a conflict. Jonathan got blown up.

+ There was something else to the east and that’s where the woman comes from. Like some kind of a goods store. She’s not associated with this house. She played both sides during the war. She was a survivor. Her last name is Poole, Poolay, or something like that. She died in old age but she appears to me as young. (At this time the front screen door opened and some EVP’s were recorded in the daughter’s bedroom of two male voices. Misty and Brenda went outside to investigate the opening door. See Reported Findings and Experiences for details. The rest of the reading was continued later.)

After Misty’s readings and near the end of the investigation, Brenda and Misty went into each bedroom to do some EVP work and to see if they could get some more information on the men whom Misty felt were haunting the house.

Master Bedroom:

Brenda: Can you give us a name?

Misty: You know his name.

Brenda: Did he fight in the battle of Lexington ?

Misty: Yes

Brenda: Is he married?

Misty: Yes

Brenda: Can he give us his wife’s name?

Misty: Annie

Brenda: Did he have any children?

Misty: Yes, two of them.

Brenda: Were they both boys?

Misty: No. Two girls.

Brenda: Was he shot in the chest?

Misty: No, he didn’t get shot. He got blown up.

Brenda: Why does he haunt this house?

Misty: He died here.

Brenda: Did they bury him here?

Misty: No, they just left him here and he rotted. Sometimes they had to do that. He’s ready to go on. He relives that day over and over. He doesn’t like to talk much.

This photo was taken while Brenda and Misty were doing some EVP work in the Master Bedroom. There is an orb on the closet door. This is also the room where the female homeowner later reported seeing a "white-light" figure.

Daughter’s Bedroom:

Upon entering the daughters bedroom, an EVP of a male voice was recorded saying what sounds like, Hold up a veil” or “Pull up a veil.”

Brenda: Eric, what is your mother’s name?

Misty: Martha.

Brenda: Were you her only son?

Misty: No, he had another brother who was about 11. They didn’t take him.

Brenda: Take him? What do you mean by take him?

Misty: They didn’t take him into the military. The soldiers didn’t take him like they did Eric because his brother was too young.

Brenda: What was your father’s name?

Misty: Edward.

Brenda: Was he in the war?

Misty: No, he died on the farm.

Brenda: So, did you volunteer with your uncle?

Misty: No, the soldiers took him.

Brenda: And made him a soldier?

Misty: Yes. They were getting low on people. He met up with his uncle somehow. He saw him at a camp.

Brenda: So in other words he was kidnapped and made to serve?

Misty: Yeah. There was a whole bunch of young boys like that they took, he said.

Brenda: So did his father die before he left?

Misty: Oh yeah, yeah. His father had been dead a few years. He was younger when his dad died.

Brenda: Was his mother remarried?

Misty: No.

Brenda: So they left her to take care of the homestead by herself?

Misty: Yes with his younger brother.

Brenda: Did he have a sweetheart?

Misty: No, he didn’t have a sweetheart.

Brenda: Did he have any sisters?

Misty: No

Brenda: Is his name on the list of those that died in the Battle of Lexington ?

Misty: He doesn’t know.

Brenda: What about Jonathan? Was he married?

Misty: He’s being standoffish. They are ready to go.

MPR SUMMARY

Based upon the evidence collected and our psychic reading, MPR feels that the house was haunted by 3 men, all who perished during the skirmishes leading up to the Lexington Battle. These men were earthbound ghosts.

A clearing was performed and the homeowner first reported that things seem to be calmer. She later contacted us after seeing a figure outlined in white light appear in her bedroom, along with some other disturbances. MPR returned to the house in March but did not feel the need to conduct another investigation. Instead, Misty made some explanations to the homeowner concerning the appearance of the “white-light” figure and reassured her that she had nothing to fear from it. Since the house is located on what is believed to be a former road frequented by troops, a residual energy will continue to remain with increased activity during the times of the year when troops were on the move.
